The Independence Square is a very important place of memory for Burundi. It is dedicated to the celebration of the newfound independence. Until July 1962, the place was called Jungers Square, a name of a former colonial governor of Ruanda-Urundi. At the entrance, a statue of Prince Louis Rwagasore – the independence hero- has been erected. On July 1st of each year, official ceremonies are held in commemoration of Burundi’s accession to Independence at the square.
